Overview

Provides leadership for the Specimen Processing team in the Blood Donor Screening Laboratory. Under general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, implements laboratory policies, procedures, and services in accordance with the Quality Management System and in compliance with applicable regulations. Provides leadership and supervision for a team of laboratory laboratory assistants and technologists in a high-throughput diagnostics laboratory. Ensures efficient and effective laboratory operations by directing the work of others and performing laboratory tasks as part of the team.

 

This is an early shift. Start time might be negotiable, but the ideal shift will start in the 5:00-7:00am time frame.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the daily operations in a fast-paced, high volume specimen processing laboratory
  • Provides direct supervision for a small team of laboratory professionals that receive, label, aliquot, and sort specimens for downstream processing.
  • Actively participate in the design and implementation of laboratory automation to facilitate rapid scale-up to company milestones.
  • Owns personnel management responsibilities including hiring, performance reviews, and employee coaching and development. 
  • Demonstrates leadership through effective communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Uses sound judgment when making independent decisions or in consultation with management.
  • Actively participates in initiatives related to process improvement, LIS and LIMS implementations, and process validations.
  • Develops and maintains schedules to ensure availability of laboratory personnel (technologists and technicians) to complete forecasted laboratory test volume
  • Manages the overtime and on-call schedules as determined by highly variable specimen volumes.
  • Leads the team to adhere to Quality Management System and ensures all policies and standard operating procedures are strictly followed
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, laws and requirements of requisite agencies by employing appropriate systems/processes. Reports all non-compliances to Lab Manager or Lab Director.
  • Ability to define when a CAPA is necessary and write and edit CAPA reports.
  • Maintains a frequent presence in the laboratory in order to monitor and adjust daily workflows to ensure efficient operations.
  • Provides back up support by performing hands-on laboratory testing for the day when necessary
  • Maintains daily inventory levels and communicates needs to Inventory Control staff
  • Ensures that all lab staff is current with required training, competencies assessments and continuing education
  • Leads individuals and work groups to continuously improve performance by creating an environment that ensures application of quality principles and techniques to achieve desired outcomes
  • Complete projects as assigned within designated timeframe

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a life sciences discipline, and 6+ years of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in a life sciences discipline, and 4+ years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • A minimum of two years of direct supervisory experience, including hiring and performance management, is strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, such as aliquoting and centrifugation, are required.
  • Experience implementing laboratory automation and new technologies is highly preferred. 
  • An understanding of DNA Extractions, PCR, or IFA techniques would be a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate a high degree of personal & professional initiative
  • Ability to develop creative, practical solutions that meet business objectives and solve problems
  • Effectively deals with conflicting views or issues and mediates fair workable solutions
  • Strong skills in organization/time management; able to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
